New GP member joins Australian Asthma Handbook Guidelines Committee

11 Feb 2022

The National Asthma Council Australia (NAC) is pleased to announce that Dr Brett Montgomery has joined the Australian Asthma Handbook Guidelines Committee.

The Guidelines Committee is a small, multidisciplinary group chaired by a general practitioner, that oversees development of the national guidelines for asthma management, the Australian Asthma Handbook.

With a longstanding interest in asthma management and a particular interest in evidence-based management of chronic disease, Dr Montgomery is clinically active as a GP in Fremantle, as well a Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Australia.

Coordinating the General Practice teaching for 3rd year medical students in the UWA Doctor of Medicine (MD) course, he leads the asthma teaching within the main general practice term, with a focus on helping students understand more about the long-term management of asthma.

Dr Montgomery replaces Dr Ian Almond, who served for four years on the Guidelines Committee.

Dr Joanna Wriedt, Chair of the NAC Board said that the organisation was delighted to welcome Dr Montgomery to the Guidelines Committee.

“Dr Montgomery brings outstanding expertise and a fresh perspective to the Guidelines Committee as they oversee the development of the Australian Asthma Handbook which continues to set the standard for best-practice asthma management in Australia.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Dr Almond who was a highly valued and long-standing member of the Australian Asthma Handbook Guidelines Committee.

"The Board further recognises the time and expertise the Guidelines Committee members give to the NAC and their professional commitment to a long-term vision for better asthma outcomes for Australians living with asthma,” she said.

The NAC Guideline Committee is currently reviewing an interim update to the Australian Asthma Handbook Version 2.2, which is due for publication in April 2022.
